Emerson Exchange – 2011

This year Emerson Exchange will be held October 24-28 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Emerson Exchange is a forum for the free exchange of non-proprietary information among the global user community of all Emerson Process Management’s products and services. The technical sessions in this conference cover a wide range of industry topics such as saving energy, reducing costs, and improving efficiency and give Emerson customers an opportunity exchange ideas, best practices and proven solutions. Also, in this conference information is provided on new capability that is being added to the DeltaV and Ovation control systems and Emerson field devices. Many of these products and complimentary products sold by alliance partners will be shown in a conference exhibition hall in the evening Monday-Wednesday after the technical sessions have finished for the day.

The technical sessions at Emerson Exchange continue to grow in size each year. Last year over 300 technical paper were presented. Most of these papers are presented or are co-presented by end users of Emerson products. The DeltaV future architecture team normally gives paper presentations on new system features that are being explored and field tested. For example, this year I will be a presenter or co-presenter in the following technical session presentations at Emerson Exchange -2011.

  • Session ID: 10-2321 :  Interfacing to Motorized Actuators
    Abstract: Motorize actuators for valves and dampers may be preferred for some process control applications. In this workshop we discuss using motorized actuators for closed loop control. Information will be provided on DeltaV composite blocks to utilize motorized actuators. Information on test results obtained in Fisher Controls’ flow lab using DeltaV and a variety of motorized actors will be presented.
  • Session ID: 4-2322 : Recovery from a Process Saturation Condition
    Abstract: The PIDPlus option of the PID function block in the DeltaV v11.3 allows improved recovery from a process saturation condition. In this workshop the technical basis for the change in the PID are presented. The impact this has on the time required to get to setpoint is examined and the improvement in response for the surge control will be demonstration using a dynamic compressor simulation

    Abstract: This workshop provides an overview of online tools that Emerson provides to help users collaborate and share best practices; Application Exchange web site for sharing composites and modules, Calculator to estimate installation cost, Device install kits, Control Loop Foundation website for process control training, User Driven Enhancement Program (UDEP) web site, eStore for branded merchandise.
  • Session ID: 7-2242 : Improving Continuous Process Operation Using Data Analytics
    Abstract: Quality parameters are available through lab measurements and the final product quality changes may go undetected until a lab sample is taken. Continuous data analytics tool provided on-line prediction of quality parameters and fault detection. Field trial results from a carbon dioxide absorption/stripping process at the UT/Austin Separations Research Program will be presented in this workshop.
  • Session ID: 8-2241 : Commissioning Highly Interactive Process
    Abstract: The size of the process equipment used in a pilot plant dictates a little buffering and interaction between process units. We examine a skid mounted high temperature CO2 recovery process with a high degree of process interaction. An effective tuning approach provided high performance control. A dynamic process simulation optimized performance by exploring various control strategies.

Also, on the last day of the conference, James Beall and I will be hosting a presentation in a “Meet the Experts” session.

  • Session ID: MTE-4066 : Maximizing the Return on Your Control Investment
    Abstract: The design and commissioning of the controls associated with a continuous or batch process directly impact plant operating efficiency and production quality and throughput. In this session we review techniques that may be used to identify control opportunities to reduce production costs, minimize variations in product quality and to maximize production within the limits set by market demand. Several common application examples from the process industry will be used to illustrate how plant production rate and product quality are directly influenced by process control variation and constraints in plant operation. Starting with an assessment of control loop utilization and automatic control performance, a step by step process is outlined that may be used to identifying and addressing areas where it is possible to justified the time and material costs required to improve control performance. In particular, information will be provided on how to quickly tune single loop control of self-regulating or integrating process and to recognize when variations in control loop performance are not associated with loop tuning. An overview will be provided of tools and techniques that may be used to achieve best control performance over a wide variety of operating conditions. Also, guidance will be provided on when it is possible to justify the cost associated with the installation and commissioning of multi-loop techniques such as feedforward control, ratio and override control. The steps required to commission multi-loop control strategies will be address along with common mistakes to avoid. Also, input will be provided on how to recognize when advanced control techniques such as Fuzzy logic or MPC are needed to achieve the desired control performance. At the end of this session a drawing will be held to give away 10 copies of “Control Loop Foundation – Batch and Continuous Processes”. Many of the ideas discussed in this session are addressed in this book.
