Professor Åström is well known throughout the world for his work in process control. The book he co-authored with Tore Hägglund, Advanced PID Control, is one of the most comprehensive texts on this topic. In the early 1990’s Professor Åström was a consultant to the Emerson team that did the basic research for the development of the DeltaV control system. Professor Åström’s input influenced this work in many ways. For example, the on-demand tuning capability that is embedded in DeltaV in is based on the relay oscillation technique that was pioneered by Professor Åström and Tore Hägglund.
Earlier this year we had the pleasure of again consulting with Professor Karl Åström on the future direction of control in the process industry. During his visit with the future architecture team we asked Professor Åström to give a lecture on “Future Technology Trends and Their Impact on the Process Control Industry”. Many of the engineers involved in research and development at the Austin site were invited to this lecture. Much of this lecture was based on a presentation that Professor Åström gave at the American Control Conference in Montreal in June, 2012. If you would like to listen to the talk he gave at the ACC conference, then the slides with voice recording of the presentation are available on-line. Professor Åström’s presentation is rather inspirational and listening to this talk may be a good way to relax and reflect on the future over the Christmas and New Year holidays.
