Many of the advanced control products available in the DeltaV control system can be traced to an advanced control research and development program established within Emerson Process Management in the early 1990s. The ISA book Advanced Control Unleashed – Plant Performance Management for Optimum Benefit, published in 2003, included examples based on advanced control software products embedded in the DeltaV control system. Since this book was published we have seen significant improvements made in advanced control tool capabilities and in user interfaces, improvements that make it easier to design and commission advanced control solutions. Also since then, new advanced control applications have been introduced for batch and continuous processes. Thus, Mark Nixon, Willy Wojsznis and I have written a new book , Advanced Control Foundation – – Tools and Techniques to Improve Process Operation, that provides a fresh look at some of the latest advanced control technologies that are available to the process industry. We are on target for this book to be published and available at ISA Automation Week, 2012.
In this new book, we assume that the reader may not have worked with advanced control systems and concepts but does have a solid understanding of conventional control techniques and software tools for control implementation within a distributed control systems. Thus, each chapter covers concepts and terminology that are helpful in working with advanced control. At various points in the book, the reader has an opportunity to see an example of an advanced control product by viewing the workshop solutions. The workshop solutions are provided on the book’s web site (coming on-line in mid-September, 2012) and can be accessed without special software. The only requirement is access to a high speed internet connection and a web browser. The workshops are structured to be fun to view as well as informative.
The book Advanced Control Foundation– Tools and Techniques to Improve Process Operation is being published by ISA and is scheduled to be available for sale in the ISA bookstore at ISA Automation Week, September 24-27, 2012Orlando, FL and at Emerson Exchange, October 8-12, 2012, Anaheim, CA. Also, starting in later September, 2012, the book may be purchased through Amazon and the ISA web site.
